ISO certification

ISO certifications are an important part of ensuring your company's success and credibility in the industry. But as a business leader, you may have come across offers of cheap, fast and painless certifications. Are they too good to be true? We spoke with Joakim Stenström, former CEO of a certification body and now an expert in management systems and ISO standards, about the risks of using rogue actors for ISO certification.

Worthless Certificates and Lost Credibility

According to Scrooge, one of the main problems with using these rogue operators may be that the certificate you receive simply becomes worthless.

“Sure, rogue actors can get your company ISO certified and meet all the requirements. However, if they do not follow the strict rules and guidelines for accreditation and certification, their accreditation may be suspended or withdrawn. Then your certificate will also be stolen.”said Scrooge.

This means that you have not only spent time and money on a useless piece of paper, but also that you risk losing the trust of your clients and partners.

Costly consequences

Beyond lost credibility and a worthless certificate, the consequences of using a rogue operator can be financially devastating.

“They must inform all their clients that their certificate is no longer valid, even the accreditation body does,” says Scrooge. “This can cause them to lose their biggest or most important customers, and even to them going bankrupt within 1-2 years. I've seen it happen twice. '

Extensive effects on the entire company

Hiring a rogue operator for ISO certification, which focuses more on issuing the certificate rather than truly implementing the principles of the standard and improving operations, can have serious consequences for your entire business. An ISO certification is not just a stamp on a piece of paper, it is a process of change that touches all levels of the organization.

An ISO certification that is not aimed at improvement can lead to your business missing out on important opportunities. Instead of streamlining processes and improving management, you may find yourself in a situation where certification becomes a burden, rather than a tool for improvement. This can result in reduced productivity, increased costs and ultimately, a deterioration in market competitiveness.

Decreased motivation

It is not just the business that is affected. Staff can also be adversely affected. If staff work hard to meet ISO requirements, but see no actual improvements in their work routines or work environment, it can lead to a loss of motivation and commitment. No one wants to work on something that ultimately leads to nothing. Living up to the requirements of a standard is about first introducing best practices - and then having a framework to constantly improve your particular company.

Risk to the brand

Finally, it can damage your brand. If your company has an ISO certificate but does not meet the expectations that the certification entails, it can lead to dissatisfaction both internally and externally. This can affect your company's relationships with both customers and suppliers.

As a business leader, it is important to understand that ISO certification is about more than just a certificate. It is about implementing a culture of continuous improvement, of optimizing processes and of engaging staff in this journey. Choosing the right partner for this process is critical to ensure that your ISO certification brings real benefits to your business.

Have you ever walked into a workshop where no one receives you, you get an unpleasant response when someone shows up and they have a dusty policy pinned to the wall that says “At Workshop X, we put the customer in focus and always provide the best possible service. We are proud to be ISO 9001 certified”? That's the effect of not taking certification seriously.

Inefficiency

We do not believe that anyone embarks on a project with the aim of creating more administration and heavier bureaucracy. But that's what rogue actors offer.

When certification is carried out by a rogue operator, who primarily focuses on quickly obtaining a certificate rather than really improving the business, it can have the opposite effect. Without the right guidance and expertise, implementation can lead to processes becoming unnecessarily complex and difficult to follow, which can create inefficiencies. In addition, a rogue certification can lead to lost opportunities for real business improvement, such as increased productivity, reduced costs, and improved quality.

Lost business opportunities

In addition to the direct financial consequences, an invalid certificate can harm the entire industry. “Rogue actors damage the reputation and credibility of the industry,” explains Scrooge. “That can lead to a decrease in trust in certifications in general, which in turn can affect all companies in the industry.”

In addition, an invalid certificate can lead to lost business opportunities. Many companies require valid ISO certificates from their suppliers and partners, and if your certificate is not valid, it can cause you to miss important business opportunities.

So how do you avoid these risks?

To avoid these risks, Scrooge recommends that you always do your homework. “Doing your homework is the key,” he says. “Make sure you know exactly what you're paying for, and that you're hiring a serious and credible actor.”

Scrooge sums it up best:

“The success and credibility of your company is too important to risk with rogue actors. Do the right thing from the beginning, and you will see long-lasting benefits and success.”
